WUSA 60 Minutes and Dan Rather are either the victims of or the perpetrators of a hoax. There is no way the Killian memos were produced on equipment that could have been found or would have been used in an ordinary office environment. You could do them yourself in MS Word in 10 minutes, Beyond all doubt the documents are forgeries. In the meantime, I am refusing to watch your station and encouraging all of my friends to do the same. ABC has provided some honest coverage of this issue and will get our business until your license review. You can turn this situation around by: 1. Providing honest local news coverage on the Fraud presented on your airwaves by 60 minutes without your consent. 2. Urging CBS Network to retire Dan Rather and fire Mary Mapes In 70 hours your network has managed to flush 70 years of hard-won credibility. Only the most extreme effort will save this sinking ship. Posted by: The Drill SGT at September 14, 2004 09:25 PM Good e-mail. Posted by: Bill from INDC at September 14, 2004 09:28 PM Bill, Could also post the mailing addresses for the CBA contacts you listed. Physical letters carry much more weight than emails or phone calls. I've got a bunch of stamps I'm willing to use for the cause. Posted by: Alex G. at September 14, 2004 09:30 PM I think you got the e-mail address wrong for Mr. Heyward. ajh@cbsNEWS.com seems to have worked. Posted by: david at September 14, 2004 09:33 PM thanks. there are 3 posible points of attack. 1. advertisers I think that affiliates are the best entry point. They can access Network management in ways that we'll never be able to reach. I seriously doubt that the real executives will ever read anything sent to those CBS addresses you posted above. Right now, the best you can expect is some admin type is counting emails into FOR and FIRE tallies. So the words to Network won't arrive with any meaning. Let's bring it to these losers... you got nuthin'... sorry ya'll, but try not to let it sting too bad -- you just got served! Posted by: Iraqi Intelligence at September 14, 2004 09:45 PM Hewitt has a nice post from Congressman Cox asking for an investigation. My favorite snip is: "Despite the growing abundance of the evidence that CBS News has aided and abetted fraud, the network has declined to reveal the source of the disputed documents. USA Today possesses the same documents, obtained independently from a person representing them to be authentic, and likewise is refusing to disclose his identity." http://www.hughhewitt.com/#postid893 Posted by: The Drill SGT at September 14, 2004 09:48 PM The CBS Paid experts who warned in advance that the documents were fake sure would seem to establish the "malice" requirement for a slander case. Too bad that nobody with standing can afford to sue them. Posted by: The Drill SGT at September 14, 2004 09:52 PM Letters are a good start. Boycotting CBS is another good step - especially if it could know 60 Minutes out of the top 20 in the ratings. But with all the news I am afraid that too many new people are tuning in to see what happening that they are offsetting many boycotters. I think a coordinated effort to make some low-rated show #1 for one week would get someone's attention. My idea? Scrubs! Plot Summary: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074958/ Posted by: moptop at September 14, 2004 10:33 PM Done, short sweet and to the point. The local CBS affiliate's manager is an old friend and former co-worker. I talked to him on the phone tonight, he's on the horn to the affiliates rep. tomorrow. Posted by: TJ at September 14, 2004 10:38 PM I made some phone calls and when I got a human, they told me the office was closed and hung up on me. I made it a point to sound very neutral when I said hello. Apparently that is how they are handling phone calls at CBS. I did get a voice mail and 60II. Posted by: armygirl at September 14, 2004 10:45 PM I called the Les Moonves number and got hold of a very nice person who passed me on to a automated voicemail. From what she said it sounded like they've been getting a lot of calls (Me: "I'd like to make a complaint about a CBS News story"; Her: "Dan Rather?") So, keep it polite (even on your recorded message) and make sure you call!!! (Just to emphasis Bill's point, remember we're the good guys... if you're offensive you just sound like a DUmber! Posted by: Grahame at September 14, 2004 10:56 PM DirecTV subscribers: We pay a monthly fee for each local network affiliate we choose to receive and a percent of it winds up back in their pocket. Posted by: groundpounder at September 14, 2004 11:26 PM Professional pride and ethics is important to most professionals. Only a few mainstream journalists seem to really care about protecting the profession's integrity, let alone the publics regard for it. CBS has either been the victim of a hoax or has pushed a fraud onto their viewers. I am gravely concerned about the effect of the corruption of one of the pillars of our nation. CBS' conduct over the past 4 days worries me. From accusations to flimsy justifications that barely have a leg to stand on; this is not the conduct of a responsible organization. I understand that as an affliate you do not control the content of 60 Minutes II, but I can no longer, in good conscience, watch your station until this situation is rectified. Posted by: ctob at September 15, 2004 12:18 AM It has broken out of the MSM and onto eBay! Posted by: Tom Dickson at September 15, 2004 02:48 AM Excellent post. That CBS continues to deny, lie, and disparage indicates how cornered they are. All this thanks to the Blogosphere! Posted by: Mark at September 15, 2004 04:18 AM Bill, Don't you think it's also a good idea for us to contact our local ABC affiliates, praise them and ABC for covering the story honestly, and encourage them to keep the pressure on? Posted by: Erin in MN at September 15, 2004 09:38 AM Here's the letter I sent to the station manager of WCCO in Minneapolis. (Thanks to the Drill Sgt above for the last paragraph, which I pretty much stole.) Dear Mr. Fabacher: CBS, CBS News, 60 Minutes II, and Dan Rather are continuing to present obviously fraudulent documents---the alleged "Killian memos"---as authentic. News organizations, including the New York Post, ABC News, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post are publishing mounting evidence that the documents are fake, and not only that, that CBS was advised that the documents are fake and ran with the story anyway. What is perhaps most damning is that the average American with any experience using Microsoft Word can see the documents' origin with his or her own eyes. The truth will come out. Regardless of political preference, we must agree that journalism requires accuracy and a willingness to correct mistakes promptly. As a CBS affiliate, your station has the power to help turn this situation around. I urge you to pressure CBS to correct its error, to admit its mistakes, and to identify the "source" who provided CBS with the fraudulent documents. The stakes are high enough that to regain credibility, CBS may have no choice but to demand that Mr. Rather resign. Furthermore, I urge you to provide honest local coverage of the events. Twin Cities television stations are uniquely positioned to do so, because attorneys John Hinderaker and Scott Johnson, who first broke the story on the Internet, live in the Twin Cities. They can be reached at feedback@powerlineblog.com . In the meantime, I am refusing to watch WCCO-TV and I am encouraging my friends to do the same. ABC has provided honest coverage of this issue, and I will watch KSTP-TV until your license review. Regards, Posted by: Erin in MN at September 15, 2004 09:48 AM This is excellent. I've attempted to post more contact info--for petitions, FEC appeals, CBS sponsors, members of the House Committee on Telecommunications & Internet, etc., over at http://theologica.blogspot.com/2004/09/rather-resignation-what-can-you-do_15.html. Keep up the great work! Posted by: JT at September 15, 2004 10:10 AM I sent this letter (snail, like the last one) to the station manager of my ABC affiliate. Dear Mr. Hubbard, This letter is to praise your station, and by extension ABC News, for aggressively pursuing the most significant story to come out of this year's presidential campaigns: CBS News and 60 Minutes II's propagation of fraudulent documents, namely the alleged "Killian Memos," in the face of overwhelming evidence that the memos are fakes. Because of it, I have switched from getting my local news from WCCO-TV to watching KSTP-TV and viewing its website. Regardless of political preference, we can agree that journalism requires accuracy and a willingness to correct errors. The best investigative journalism uncovers these errors so the public can make informed decisions. I urge you, as an ABC affiliate station, to provide the best local coverage of CBS's apparently deliberate attempt to perpetrate an obvious fraud. Twin Cities television stations are uniquely positioned to do so. This is because attorneys John Hinderaker and Scott Johnson, who broke the story on the Internet, live in the Twin Cities. They can be reached at feedback@powerlineblog.com . Also, Mr. Hinderaker can be reached by phone at In the interest of speed, I have sent the above information to KSTP-TV by e-mail as a news tip, via the "Contact Us" link on the website. But I felt that as an ABC affiliate, you deserved a personal note as well. Thank you for providing quality programming and for airing ABC News.
