Former Georgia Senator Max Cleland, center, and former Green Beret Lt. Jim Rassmann, right, try to deliver a letter at the check point to the entrance of President Bush's ranch Wednesday Aug. 25, 2004 in Crawford, Texas. To the left is Jerry Patterson, a Veteran who runs Veterans Affairs in Texas. Cleland tried to deliver a letter protesting ads challenging John Kerry (news - web sites)'s Vietnam service to President Bush at his Texas ranch Wednesday, but neither a Secret Service official nor a state trooper would take it. Patterson said someone from the Bush campaign contacted him Wednesday morning and asked him if he would travel to the ranch, welcome Cleland to Texas and accept the former senator's letter. The funniest line from this whole stunt:

A Texas state official and Vietnam veteran, Jerry Patterson, said someone from the Bush campaign contacted him Wednesday morning and asked him if he would travel to the ranch, welcome Cleland to Texas and accept the former senator's letter to Bush.

"I tried to accept that letter and he would not give it to me," said Patterson. "He would not face me. He kept rolling away from me. He's quite mobile."

The whole scenario is ludicrous.

That's like a Monty Python line. "That rabbit, sir..."
Oh, wups, double bad taste points for the way the rabbit gets it. Hadn't thought of that.

The whole Kerry campaign, all the way down to the lowliest staffer, deserves purple hearts for all the self-inflicted battle-wounds they've given themsleves this month.

I've seen Kerry's "Daily Show" appearance panned, but the Kerry campaign is providing some damn good comedy.

I just love the mental picture I'm getting of Cleland moving around shouting to the press, "And President Hitler is still attacking my patriotism by not even accepting this letter!" or something, while Patterson is chasing him, arm outstretched, attempting to receive the letter....

Bush should've (but, given that he signed that McCain-Feingold atrocity, won't) have had someone standing at his gate with a copy of the First Amendment to hand to these numbnuts.

hehe

Yeah...that's the part that made me laugh out loud too.

What part of hell does that consign me to?

"He's quite mobile." Holy shit that's funny.

So...Cleland doesn't trust the US Mail service, doesn't like the postalworkers, trying to take their job, likes wasting campaign dollars, or looking for a career change???? too funny

great photo. between Cleland the comic and the Kerry Troopers "campaign releases," we've got humor potential to outlast the apocalypse here.

I can just see Shrub hiding in his house peeking out of the curtains in his living room, quaking in terror of a man who actually served his country insteading of going AWOL. I know, I know, technically Bush is a deserted...

I can't wait until the RNC to see all of George's buddies from Alabama rally around him...

President Bush is in Washington. I hope Max didn't wheel himself all the way from Boston.

Papertiger brings up a point about this whole dog-and-pony: did Cleland not know that Bush was in Washington? 'cause Cleland's from Georgia, and I don't expect he was just in the neighborhood...
