INDC Cartoon Fun: Did You Know That John Kerry Served in Vietnam?
Posted by Bill
So you want to talk about Vietnam, eh John? At times they had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the countryside of South Vietnam in addition to the normal ravage of war, and the normal and very particular ravaging which is done by the applied bombing power of this country. -- John Kerry vs. In 1969 and 1970, I was officer in charge of a couple PCF’s in Coastal Division 13, the one right next to John Kerry’s. The officers and men that I served with were honorable and honest. About 90 percent of us were volunteers; we knew what we were doing, we knew why we were there. I can’t speak with any assuredness what went on on John Kerry’s boats or with his crews; I wasn’t there. I do know that in a whole year that I spent patrolling, I didn’t see anything like a war crime, an atrocity, anything like that. Time and again, I saw American fighting men put themselves in greater danger trying to avoid … the term our politicians coined for Vietnam, I believe, was “collateral damage.” When John Kerry returned to the country, he was sworn in front of Congress, and then he told my family, my parents, my sister, my brother, my neighbors … he told everyone I knew and everyone that I’d ever know that I and my comrades had committed unspeakable atrocities, that we tortured people, raped women, burned villages without any reason, that sort of thing. Or this: My name is Joe Ponder, I live in Keystone Heights, FL. I served in Coastal Divisions 11 and 13 from July of '68 until I was wounded in a Sealords combat mission in Nov of 1968 on the Bo De River. During this time Senator Kerry was in our unit. I'd prefer not to be here, but I feel that it is my duty to be here and stand with this association and explain why I signed this letter. My family feels I need to be here. It's my duty to be here. My daughters and my wife wanted to know ... (pause, chokes up) if I took part in the atrocities described. I do not believe the things that are described happened. Many, many more statements from the vast majority of Kerry's fellow swiftboat crewman can be found here. And some more particulars, for good measure: Kerry began by referring to the Winter Soldiers Investigation in Detroit. Here, he claimed, "over 150 honorably discharged and many very highly decorated veterans testified to war crimes committed in Southeast Asia, not isolated incidents but crimes committed on a day-to-day basis with the full awareness of officers at all levels of command." Just a reminder ... I don't think that I could ever vote for such a man; someone that has never apologized for or disavowed such destructive, treasonous comments that were very possibly uttered in the name of career advancement. And no, "Where did all that dark hair go, Tim?" does NOT count as an apology. I don't want this man as my President. Some might dismiss this as some blustery, right-wing talking point, but to me it's just common sense; I can't respect what the man did, and because he hasn't atoned for it, I can't respect the man. I've also blogged about this here, here, and here. UPDATE: Jesus people, look closely at the necklace; those aren't seashells. And the flag? It's white, see ... I honestly don't know why the Hell I bother. Posted by Bill at July 20, 2004 12:01 AM | TrackBack (10) CommentsI can't vote for someone with the transparent shallow character of John Kerry and John Edwards either, and that knowledge breeds an alarming question: Aren't those of us who share political philosophy wasting time agreeing with each other? Shouldn't we make an effort to counter the arguments from our political opponents in order to steer the election toward victory? Given the hysteria of broadcast television and print news, I don't see how that can happen unless a grass-roots movement takes hold. What can be done, except for giving gobs of money to consultants, to invigorate the Bush-Cheney campaign? I do not want a repeat of the Dole vs. Clinton debacle and if Kerry is elected I'm not sure if I can maintain my sanity. I am open to ideas. Dan Patterson Posted by: Dan Patterson at July 20, 2004 09:14 AM Uh ... so am I. As it is, I blog, and not everyone that reads my blog is currently planning on voting for George Bush. Posted by: Bill from INDC Journal at July 20, 2004 09:27 AM It is common sense - Lets put some names on the subject! 1. As a Combat Engr Lt in NAM in 71 things were still happening US KIA - killed in action = 2357 (7 per day, Iraq was = less than 2 per day). No not much of way to go when I retunred - not even one thank you for many years. What are thier names? 2 Like wise, I would like to know the names of the soldiers that died in NAM while Bill Clinton was spending a week in Moscow after he dodged the draft. What are their names? 3. Every time Bush 43 and his team spoke about the run up and execution to the Iraq war he should have read the list of KIA's from Desert Storm. He should have told Saddam their names and said simply you have violated the terms of surrender and we care about the sacrifice of these soldiers. We will continue to sacrifice until you surrender. (The rest of the resolution stuff was and is welfare for rich people.) What are their names? It is common sense - How can we care if we don't know their names? Posted by: steve Dracos at July 20, 2004 07:02 PM I don't know if I'm voting for Bush but I sure as hell ain't voting for Kerry. The reasons you outline are very similar to my own. Posted by: Ralph at July 20, 2004 11:59 PM Did you notice the Surrender flag and Atrocity Necklace the drawing has? Posted by: Paulie at The Commons at July 21, 2004 08:03 AM Nice Paulie! Someone actually e-mailed me and asked me if those were seashells. Posted by: Bill from INDC at July 21, 2004 08:27 AM God bless all who served in Nam - I was in college and the lottery was in effect - I did not serve, but am grateful and deeply indebted to those men and women who did - Let freedom reign.
