Mourners gather in front of the embassy.

The crowd moves towards Washington Circle.

The Spanish Ambassador chokes up as he speaks to reporters: "The Spanish people, along with the American people, all the freedom-loving peoples of the world, we will persevere together."

"The smart thing for us to do is stick together." (I think, roughly)

UPDATE: WRONG! - "Madrid, The beauty that you are, we are with you!"

Yes, the smart thing for all of us nations that still believe in basic human dignity is for us to stick together. The nation of Spain has contributed generously to the coalition efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, and it appears that it is now suffering for its committment and determination. Spain, this American thanks you for your efforts and mourns your loss with you. Please don't lose heart, and let's stick together.

Cousin Dave - My rusty Spanish translation was wrong, but your sentiment is still correct.

I'm homesick:

The sign is difficult to translate... MAJO is cute, nice, pretty, handsome, friendly, my cutie-pie, who knows what. A girl could say about a boy she likes: he's so majo...

It's signed by "those from Arguelles", a student neighborhood not far from the university. I had a few good times around there in my day. The tapas are to die for.

Oh to be there now!

Thanks for the translation!
